Signs and Diagnosis of Colon Cancer

Signs and Diagnosis of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is a condition in which cancerous tumors grow in large intestines. There are several signs and symptoms of the condition. However, these signs can also be caused by things other than cancer. Therefore, proper diagnosis is important. So, here is everything you need to know about the signs and diagnosis of colon cancer.

Signs of colon cancer
In many cases, the signs of colon cancer might not be seen in the initial stages. But in some cases, they do, and they can include the following:

  • Changes in bowel movements which can be noticed in the form of constipation, diarrhea, and narrowed stools
  • Unsatisfactory bowel movement or constipation
  • Blood discharge from the rectum
  • Bleeding while passing stool, which makes the stool appear black or dark brown
  • Pain or cramps in the abdomen
  • Feeling weak and tired
  • Unexplained weight loss

Also note:

  • In many cases, colon cancer tumors start to bleed inside the digestive tract. This leads to blood with stools or darker color of the stools. However, usually, there is no change in the color of the stools. But, with time, the bleeding can continue and lead to loss of red blood cells in excess and cause anemia. Therefore, in some cases, one of the first symptoms of colon cancer becomes reduced red blood count in the body.
  • In cases where cancer has spread to the liver, the symptoms can be identified during the medical examination. Other symptoms can include jaundice which can be identified by yellowing of the skin and whitening of the eyes.
  • If cancer has spread to the lungs, problems with breathing can be one of the symptoms.

Diagnosis of colon cancer
The signs and diagnosis of colon cancer are some of the most important factors in treating the condition. For healthy people who do not have any signs or symptoms of colon cancer, it is recommended by doctors to get regular screenings done. These screenings can help detect any tumors in the early stages and can be cured more effectively.

In cases where signs and symptoms of a person indicate colon cancer, the diagnosis can be made using the following procedures and test. These include:

  • Colonoscopy
This is a procedure done to diagnose the condition using a colonoscope (a long tube). This procedure helps to detect abnormalities in the colon.
  • Blood tests
Although blood tests cannot indicate the presence of colon cancer, it is still advised by doctors to know the overall health of the patient. This is done to test the functioning of vital organs such as the liver and kidney.
