Types of breast cancer
Once the condition is diagnosed, it is important to determine the type of breast cancer a person. This is done to give them the most effective treatment. There will be various things taken into consideration by the doctor. These will include the following:
- If cancer has spread outside the breasts
- The tissue type where the disease started
In most cases, adenocarcinomas of the breast are found. These tumors are commonly found in certain other types of cancers. They usually form in the ducts and tumors that are responsible for secreting fluids. In breast cancer, these tumors form in the glands that produce milk. These are known as milk ducts or lobules.
Broadly, there are two types of breast cancers.
- Invasive breast cancer
This is the infiltrating breast cancer in which cells reach beyond the barriers of normal breast tissue. These cells break free and travel with the bloodstream and through lymph nodes to reach other parts of the body.
- Non-invasive breast cancer
In this type of breast cancer, the cancer cells remain at one location and do not spread to other parts of the body, such as the ducts or the surrounding tissue.
There are several other types of breast cancers, and they include:
- Sarcoma of the breast
- Metaplastic carcinoma
- Adenocystic carcinoma
- Phyllodes tumor
